BEIRUT, September 25 (RIA Novosti) – The Syrian government supports the new UN Security Council resolution on fighting terrorism, SANA reported Thursday, citing Syrian UN Ambassador Bashar Jaafari.
The Syrian government supports „any efforts of the international coalition against terrorism, provided care for the lives of civilians and respect for the sovereignty of the state in accordance with international agreements,“ Jaafari said.
The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution on foreign terrorist fighters. It „condemns the violent extremism, which can be conducive to terrorism, and sectarian violence and the commission of terrorist acts by foreign terrorist fighters, and demands that all foreign terrorist fighters withdraw immediately from all zones of armed conflict and cease all terrorist acts.“
The Syrian diplomat added that Israel’s participation in the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) group „undermines the credibility of the coalition.“ He recalled that Israel brought down a Syrian military aircraft which was on a combat mission against the IS and Jabhat al-Nusra a few days ago over Golan Heights.
The Unites States has carried out a number of airstrikes against IS positions in Syria using aircraft, drones and Tomahawk missiles. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also reportedly took part in the attacks.
Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad denied Tuesday any coordination with the United States Air Force, which has launched airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria, but he confirmed that the authorities knew in advance of the upcoming operation.
